These picture frame embellishment concepts are ideal for novices! Create a present or distinctive home decoration with these 40+ picture frame suggestions.

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate. Some of these methods are simpler than others, but none are particularly challenging. Basic crafting abilities are essential, such as utilizing a paintbrush or cutting tools and stenciling.

Photo frame decoration ideas

I’ve taken you on a journey through the craft shop, where we’ve discovered how to embellish birdhouses, vases, trays, wooden slices, wooden blocks, containers, plates, wooden plaques, and beyond.

Today’s outing is promised to be enjoyable as you’re heading back to the unfinished wood craft section – it’s time to embellish those affordable wooden picture frames!

If I’m being truthful, I adore the $2 – $3 wooden frames (they typically accommodate 4″ x 6″ images). These frames are budget-friendly, clearly, but they also offer the ideal dimensions for decoration.

Advice for Embellishing Frames

Don’t hesitate to dive in. If you make a mistake, just buy another frame and give it another go!

Where to Acquire Frames

Frames can be sourced at Michaels, Jo-Ann, Walmart, Dollar Tree, and numerous other smaller craft retailers.

The best places for purchasing frames in bulk are Amazon.com and Oriental Trading Company. The most affordable frames online are slightly over $2, and if you’re handling a large project (like summer camp, bible school, or a craft night), buying them online is more convenient anyway.

Let’s not overlook thrift shops and Goodwill. Visit them regularly, especially if you’re on a tight budget!

Craft Materials

I utilize a range of materials to enhance the frames: scrapbook paper, paint, ribbon, stencils, Mod Podge, tissue paper, napkins, brads, wooden shapes, and more.

I don’t apply a separate sealer on top – only Mod Podge. Occasionally, I incorporate Dimensional Magic to highlight certain areas and/or wooden pieces for added interest.

Preparing Your Surface

Sand the surface if needed. You can leave the frame as-is or apply a basecoat with paint first. It’s your choice!

Paint and Mod Podge to Utilize

You can use standard craft paint (like FolkArt) along with spray paint or chalk paint. The only type of paint I would avoid is latex, especially if you’re planning to use Mod Podge (they don’t complement each other well).

You don’t HAVE to paint, but I personally enjoy painting so I always choose to do so.

Regarding Mod Podge formulas, you can utilize regular Matte, Satin, or Gloss based on the finish you aim for.

Of course, the Sparkle and Glitter formulas add a delightful touch to a frame, particularly during festive seasons. It’s ultimately up to you.
