Resin jewelry created with dried flowers

Did you know that searches on the internet for “dried flower crafts” this year have increased fivefold compared to five years ago? Of course, you might not be aware . . . but I researched it, and it’s accurate.

The justification, in my opinion, is that dried flowers possess a timeless quality. And what else is everlasting? Jewelry. When the two are merged? You can create some stunning (and eternal!) resin jewelry.

This is what I will demonstrate to you today!

By the conclusion, you’ll be crafting resin projects such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, hair ornaments, pendants, and much more.

This type of jewelry is beloved by many due to its beauty, lightness, and suitability for sale or gifting. Incorporate the flowers, and you’ll own some classic pieces that you’ll wear continuously.

Guidelines for Creating Jewelry with Resin

If you’re an enthusiastic crafter, you’ll probably find that working with resin is quite straightforward – easier than you may expect. Before we dive into the project, I’d like to discuss the procedure and address some frequently asked questions. I hope these insights ensure your project succeeds on the first attempt!

Is resin a suitable material for jewelry?

Indeed, resin is an excellent choice for jewelry as it dries crystal clear and is remarkably sturdy. Additionally, resin is simpler to work with compared to various other materials (such as metalworking, for instance).

Is creating resin jewelry costly?

In the crafting domain, yes, resin is pricier than other materials. Additionally, you will have to purchase casting molds or bezels, along with jump rings and chains.

An 8 oz. two-part epoxy resin kit typically costs around $20, but one kit can yield approximately four to eight pieces of jewelry. Sometimes even more! It’s worthwhile if you plan to create multiple pieces (to sell or give away) or if you collaborate with a group and split the expenses.

Is resin jewelry fragile?

No, it’s quite robust. However, that doesn’t imply it can’t be damaged. Exercise caution as you would with any fine piece of jewelry . . . particularly with delicate corners or intricate details.

The greater issue is scratching – resin may get scratched (though not easily). If it does, and the scratch isn’t too profound, consider wet sanding it. Use 400 grit sandpaper, followed by 600, 800, 1000, and 1500 . . . until it’s polished.

You may need to…

Utilize polishing compound if it isn’t crystal clear. However, it’s not inexpensive! You might wish to keep some compound handy if you’re marketing your creations. Otherwise, strive to prevent scratching whenever feasible.

Is resin jewelry hazardous?

In its liquid state, the resin ingredients may be harmful, as some individuals are reactive to the vapors. That’s the reason I have included safety gear in the supplies. Nevertheless, once the jewelry is crafted and completely cured, it is safe and non-toxic.

Which type of resin do you utilize for crafting jewelry?

You’ll want to select clear epoxy resin. Plaid Crafts offers Mod Podge Resin, which I find quite user-friendly. It boasts excellent lightfastness properties and cures to a hard, clear glossy finish that others may lack. Additionally, MP Resin is FDA certified as food safe, features low VOCs, and is manufactured in the USA.

The choice is yours! Craft stores carry a variety of brands, so be sure to examine the labels to determine what suits your requirements best. Personally, I prefer not to purchase online unless it’s made in the USA.

  • Pendant molds

  • Respirator

  • Gloves

  • Blowtorch

  • Jewelry pliers

  • Epoxy resin
  • Dried flowers
  • Cups
  • Craft sticks
  • Large jump ring
  • Necklace chain
  • Combine the transparent resin following the directions on the package. Usually, it’s a 1:1 ratio of resin to hardener. Utilize crafting sticks to ensure you scrape the edges and mix thoroughly.

  • Pour the resin into the pendant mold(s) you’ve selected, filling it about halfway. Allow it to sit for one hour, using your torch or lighter to eliminate any bubbles. Tip: you can also gently exhale on the surface to help remove bubbles.

  • Gently press the flowers you have chosen into the resin. Using tweezers might be beneficial since the flowers are fragile, and you want to place them with care. Pour the remaining resin over the flower and fill the mold completely. Eliminate any bubbles. After five minutes, check again for bubbles (and remove them!). Allow your item to cure for 24 hours before removing it from the mold.

  • Employ your jewelry pliers to attach the jump ring and necklace chain to your pendant. Your project is finished.
