Outdoor Obstacle Course for Kids

Play Game

Looking for a quick and enjoyable concept to entertain the children for a morning? Create a Kids Obstacle Course Adventure, of course!

The grandkids all found their way to our home unexpectedly (how delightful!). I desired an activity that would expend some energy in the brisk morning before it warmed up and we were confined indoors.

We ventured outdoors and I declared, “Let’s create an obstacle course!” I instructed Papa to fetch our wooden ladder from the shed, and then each child dashed to the garage to discover items they could contribute to the course. It was quite a flurry.

Create a Map for the Kids Obstacle Course

If you have some time to spare, it would be fantastic to sketch a small Kids Obstacle Course Adventure Map. This would work wonderfully for a birthday celebration. Then, the aspiring Olympians can review the course and strategize on how to navigate it most efficiently.

Supplies for the Obstacle Course

I must admit, the children had a blast gathering items for the obstacle course, each offered a suggestion and it all came together quite nicely.

The items you possess in your yard are an excellent starting point. We have an antiquated swing set and jungle gym, a driveway, and sidewalk, along with some sizeable rocks in the landscaping that we could utilize. The kids decided the obstacle course would loop around the house. They would commence on one side of the driveway, circle the house with a series of “obstacles” and conclude on the opposing side of the driveway. This course incorporated both the jungle gym and one large rock.

How to Prepare for a Kids Obstacle Course:

  • Identify what items you currently have that you can integrate into the course (steps, play equipment, tree stump, sidewalks, and driveways,
  • Determine the path the children will navigate using these items from the yard
  • Incorporate your “challenges”
  • Create a straightforward Kids Obstacle Course Adventure Map (particularly suitable for occasions like a birthday celebration)
  • Clarify the course and regulations (especially if you wish to turn it into a competitive event)
  • Position some assistants at challenges that require resetting or need oversight
  • Go!!

Different Paces for Kids Obstacle Course

Two of the grandchildren wanted to sprint, two were inclined to stroll through the course and the youngest desired to observe. We concluded that those wanting to rush would go initially while the others would follow at their own pace. The first duo ended up traversing the course multiple times before becoming too warm. The youngest required an adult to accompany her for the confidence to tackle the course. She went last after witnessing the others and recognizing that it appeared quite enjoyable.

Kids Obstacle Course Concepts

Here’s a compilation of “challenge” concepts (the materials you’ll need depend on your selections):

  • Propel a ball or paper planes at a target – find instructions for crafting a target here
  • Draw a hopscotch pattern on a driveway or sidewalk using sidewalk chalk
  • Lay a ladder on the ground for stepping through (wood is preferred over metal)
  • Pool noodles – countless options, lay on the ground, create loops, etc.
  • Pool noodles – shape them into an arch and crawl beneath (place the ends on short stakes to form an arch)
  • Stack cans or coffee related containers and knock them down with balls
  • Utilize pallets to construct various obstacles to climb over, etc.
  • Used tires, tire tubes
  • Balance beam fashioned from a plank or simply a rope on the surface
  • Throw balls into a receptacle, wagon, or through a hoop or steps of a ladder
  • Cones – to outline the course, navigate around
  • Water guns aiming at a target or person
  • Pink flamingos (or other posts) – toss rings around the neck
  • String
  • Strings between trees and children should crawl beneath them
  • Utilize spray paint on the lawn to designate the route or create an obstacle
  • Wear a burlap sack and leap a distance
  • Position a ball between your knees and walk a distance
  • Transport an item – boulder, sandbag, etc.
  • The possibilities are endless!!!

Outdoor Obstacle Course Ideas for Toddlers

The obstacle course can be customized for toddlers with some creativity! Gather and utilize objects that will be secure and match the skills and capabilities of the toddler. Here are a few suggestions for you, but modify these ideas with the toys and items you already possess. Be available to assist the toddler as they navigate through the course.

  • Design a sidewalk chalk path on a driveway for the toddler to follow.
  • Construct a tunnel for them to crawl through using a blanket draped over a table or chairs.
  • Incorporate a toddler slide as part of the challenge.
  • Add play equipment such as a Little Tikes car to travel along the sidewalk.
  • Arrange hula hoops, ropes, or pool noodles on the ground to traverse.
  • Use a rolled-up rug as a balancing beam.
  • Have them catch balls or balloons or transport the ball across the yard to place in a basket.

Ideas for a Natural Obstacle Course

You can also create an obstacle course using solely natural elements present in your area. This will be very personalized as every location has distinct objects available. Examine your surroundings and take note of items that could serve as obstacles in your course.

Position numbered flags or notes with directions near each element for the children to decipher what comes next. This will enable them to accomplish the activity you have designed and finish the course sequentially. Here are several suggestions for you.

  • Utilize a log or low wall as a balance beam
  • Stepping stones can be created with landscaping rocks, slices of logs, or other materials found in your yard
  • Incorporate your outdoor furniture or picnic table into the course safely
  • Ascend partway up a tree and then descend
  • Transport branches or stones from one location to another
  • Create a structure or art piece from natural materials
  • Use pine cones as “balls” to toss into a basket

Show and Tell!

Don’t forget to leave comments and share photos of your Kids Obstacle Course Adventure for additional ideas for “obstacles.” The suggestions are undoubtedly boundless (limited only by time, funds, and energy!).
