I’m truly captivated by quilting, and I entirely credit Ashley from Mommy by Day Crafter by Night and her quilting series for igniting this passion.

The first genuine endeavor I took on was a zig-zag quilt, and after completing it, I found my mind racing with ideas for my next project.

This baby doll quilt appeared to be the ideal subsequent endeavor. It’s compact, feasible, and serves as an excellent opportunity for novices to hone their skills in layering, stitching, and straight lines without feeling inundated.

I modified the dimensions and procedures from my initial quilt to ensure it was perfectly suited for dolls, and now I’m sharing precisely how I created it so that you can craft one as well.

This offers an incredible chance to refine quilting techniques while producing something whimsical and functional.

Selecting the appropriate fabric is largely a personal choice, but quilting cotton is straightforward to sew, presses nicely, and secures stitches effectively.

Doll Quilt Instructions

Step 1: Ruffle the Fabric Strips

Begin with the three strips for the quilt top. You will be ruffling both longer sides of each strip.

You can utilize a ruffle foot on your sewing machine if available, or apply the traditional gathering technique:

  • Sew a long straight stitch along both long edges
  • Utilize a longer stitch length and slightly loosen the tension
  • Gently pull the bottom thread to gather the fabric

If this is your first time, a brief gathering tutorial can be quite beneficial and will demonstrate the process more clearly than text alone.

Continue gathering until each strip spans 24 inches in length.

After ruffling, position each strip atop its corresponding lining piece with the right sides facing up.

Topstitch them together, ensuring your seam allowance remains consistent.

When complete, you should have three finished strips, each with the ruffled fabric on top and the lining fabric beneath.

Step 2: Organize the Quilt Top

Arrange the three ruffled strips and determine the sequence you prefer.

To stitch them together, position two strips right sides facing each other and align the long edges.

Use the seam threads from attaching the ruffles as a reference and sew straight lines down the length of the strip.

Repeat with the last strip. Upon completion, your quilt top should be entirely assembled, with the ruffles oriented vertically.

Step 3: Assemble the Quilt Sandwich

Place your quilt backing smoothly, right side facing down. If required, use a flat sheet or floor area to lay it out evenly.

Spread the batting on top and eliminate any creases. Then, top it off with the quilt top, right side facing up. This stacked arrangement is referred to as a quilt sandwich.

Step 4: Secure the Layers

Employ safety pins to fasten through all the levels, distributing them evenly across the quilt.

This ensures everything remains in place during sewing.

Step 5: Stitch the Layers

Now is the moment to quilt. I utilized the stitching-in-the-ditch technique, which is quite beginner-friendly.

Sew directly above the seams between each strip. The stitches merge into the seams, rendering them less apparent on the quilt top.

Aim to maintain straight lines since they will be more visible on the quilt backing.

Step 6: Trim the Quilt

Even out the quilt by trimming the edges. A cutting mat and rotary cutter simplify this task, but scissors will also suffice.

As this quilt is intended for a baby doll, I didn’t focus excessively on achieving perfection.

Step 7: Attach the Binding

Conclude the quilt by affixing the binding using the 5½ x 90-inch strip. You will need to join shorter strips to achieve the complete length.

Refer to a quilt binding tutorial to attach it neatly and securely.
