Pink cherry blossoms made from napkins hang on spring branches.
  • 1 Paper serviette (3-layer) e.g. in pink 🛒 or white 🛒
  • 20 cm white sewing thread
  • 2 small decorative beads e.g. here 🛒
  • optional: watercolor or diluted acrylic paint
  1. Peel off a single, thin layer from the napkin – most napkins consist of three layers, so you only require one.

  2. If you wish for colored cherry blossoms – perhaps in soft pink or dusty rose – you may now color the detached napkin layer. To achieve this, gently dab some watercolor or thinned acrylic paint onto the layer using a brush or sponge and let it dry thoroughly before proceeding.

    optional: watercolor

  3. Slice the individual layer into strips approximately 4 cm wide.
  4. Take a strip and fold it multiple times into a small, compact bundle.
  5. Cut an oval approximately 5 cm in length from the folded bundle. You will achieve a complete stack of uniform petals with a single cut – convenient!
  6. Snip a length of sewing thread around 20 cm long and string a decorative bead onto it. Next, draw both ends of the thread through the eye of the needle to form a double thread.

  7. Take a bundle of 5-6 petals, push the needle through the base of the bundle and draw the double thread completely through.
  8. Thread a second decorative bead on the opposite side of the petal bundle. Then remove one of the two yarn threads from the needle, thread the remaining thread once more from bottom to top through the second bead, and tie both yarn threads securely together.
  9. Grip the two beads firmly with your thumb and forefinger, and gently fan out the individual petals in a clockwise direction with your other hand. Proceed slowly and carefully – the napkin paper is quite fragile.
  10. Tie the two ends of the yarn together to form an approximately 6-7 cm long loop that can be used to hang the flower later.
Hang the completed cherry blossoms on branches – for instance on dried wild perennials like yarrow or chicory, which you can discover for free along the path. These are exceptionally light and appear stunning as a natural base. Bends and folds in the petals are not imperfections, but rather lend character to the flowers! Even authentic cherry blossoms are not without flaws. That’s what makes this DIY version so enchanting.
