How to Preserve Flowers in Resin

Are you intrigued by the idea of conserving flowers in resin? I’m thrilled to share this with you today! Recently, I discovered how to utilize resin, and I must say, it’s revolutionary.

I’ve experimented with resin a few times in the past, but that was ages ago, and I believe it was merely on a tray. Clearly, my memory is hazy.

Recently, I ventured back into the world of resin. I commenced with resin coasters and then geode coasters… and then I thought it was time to explore dried flowers.

Have you noticed the stunning jewelry and pendants that individuals are crafting? I desired to try that too.

I initiated the process by preserving flowers in flat glass candle holders… and I’m eager to show you the method I employed. This technique will remain consistent, regardless of whether you opt for a different surface or silicone molds.

Prepare to create unique mementos using this straightforward tutorial!

How to Preserve Dried Flowers in Resin

Prior to using the resin, you must gather some dried flowers. You can acquire them (from sources like Etsy or Amazon). Alternatively, you could purchase a bouquet or utilize your own from the garden and process them yourself.

Press/Dry the Flowers

There exist multiple techniques to dry (and press) flowers. If you opt for the methods outlined below, ensure to use the freshest flowers possible. Press them immediately after you gather them.

  1. Wooden flower press – two wooden pieces secured with screws at all four corners, allow to dry naturally for 3 – 4 weeks.
  2. Between the pages of books – position flowers between parchment paper in a hefty book’s pages, close it and weigh it down with additional books. Leave to dry for 3 – 4 weeks.
  3. Silica gel – this method is excellent for drying flowers you wish to keep dimensional (such as for paperweights or pendants). It takes 2 – 7 days. I have not discovered a method to keep flowers flat while using silica.
  4. Microwave press – the flowers remain between two ceramic tiles bound together with rubber bands. This technique appears to best preserve color, and the process takes about 30 minutes.

My preferred approach is microwaving since it seems to capture the color most effectively. Note: most flowers will shed some color throughout the drying procedure. It’s an unavoidable occurrence unless alternative commercial techniques are used.

Supplies You’ll Need

In addition to the flowers, you’ll require some materials. Here’s what you ought to have prepared:

Epoxy resin – generally a two-part system with a 1:1 mixing ratio of resin and hardener.

Surface or silicone mold – you’ll be embedding the flowers into a defined surface, whether it is a flat glass candle holder or a silicone mold (to create jewelry items or paperweights, for instance).

Personal protective gear – eyewear, respirator, and gloves are commonly advised. Refer to your package guidelines.

Mixing cups and craft sticks – you’ll require one cup for mixing the resin and then separate cups for combining resin with additives. Popsicle sticks are for stirring.

Tweezers – dried flowers can be rather delicate, hence tweezers assist in placing them without damaging the petals.

Additives – you can integrate various elements into a resin project with the flowers, such as alcohol inks, glitter, and gold flakes.

Timer – while your phone can suffice, you’ll need something to monitor stirring time.

Heat gun – this tool is optional, but if you’re intending to work with resin, it aids in easily eliminating bubbles.

Combine the Resin

Combine the resin following the instructions on the package. It will consist of a 1:1 ratio of resin and hardener.

The estimate for this endeavor regarding the resin required is roughly 1.5 oz per holder.

Measure resin by volume rather than weight. Utilize a distinct measuring cup for each component. After measuring equal portions of both components, pour them into a mixing vessel. Gently stir the two components together for 3 minutes. As you begin to stir, turbulent cloudy patterns will form.

Position the Flowers

Position the flowers on the glass candle holders as you prefer. Dried flowers are quite delicate, so use tweezers to assist you with the arrangement.

Pour the Resin into the Glass Dish

Gradually pour the clear resin over the flower. Fill the candle holders as much as possible without spilling over. If the dried flowers start to rise, gently push them back down with a toothpick.

Dust Gold Flakes

Dust gold flakes over the transparent resin.

Eliminate Bubbles and Allow Curing

Eliminate bubbles using a heat gun or a resin-safe bubble remover. Allow to set for five minutes and then repeat to remove any remaining bubbles if necessary. Permit the resin to cure completely following the package instructions (typically 24 hours).

Will flowers discolor in resin?

Yes, if they are inadequately dried. They may decompose within the resin if not dried properly, and your project may be irreparable. So ensure they are entirely dry prior to use!
