How to Refinish a Coffee Table for Beginners

Prepare the Table

This is my “recent” coffee table, which I acquired for $15 on Facebook Marketplace. It is a durable, solid wood table, ideal for refinishing.

Before starting, it’s essential to have a clear idea of how you wish to refinish the furniture.

For staining, you’ll need to sand. If you’re painting, ensure the area is thoroughly cleaned.

I am opting for a blend of both methods. I desire a stained top with painted sides and legs.

Sand the wood using 120-grit sandpaper, and finish with up to 220-grit. The goal is to eliminate the existing finish so the new stain can penetrate the wood.

You can do this manually, but it’s quite labor-intensive. I highly recommend utilizing an orbital sander.

Once the top was entirely sanded, I thoroughly cleaned the table. Sanding produces a significant amount of dust, so I opted to clean after rather than before.

This is the moment when I became deeply engaged in the project and completely forgot to capture any photos. I apologize, but the steps are quite straightforward, and images aren’t mandatory.
