Do you recall when the Keep Calm fad was prevalent? Though the trend has faded, I still cherish this yarn tote and utilize it frequently.

I often crochet in the vehicle while traveling, and my yarn would end up knotted each instance.

This yarn tote ensures everything stays tidy with a designated slot for hooks, a compartment for patterns, and an innovative opening that allows the yarn to pass effortlessly through the side.

Now, I can grab my bag and crochet on the sofa, in the car, or at the park without contending with a tangled chaos.

  • 1 – 5″ x 7″ (slots for crochet hooks)

Directions

Step 1: Print the Fabric Label

Print the Keep Calm and Carry Yarn graphic onto fabric using your home printer.

If you haven’t printed on fabric before, this guide will help you through the procedure: How to Print on Fabric.

The printable document is made for a full sheet of paper. If a smaller label is desired, resize the design prior to printing.

Keep the printed fabric aside while you prepare the tote pieces.

Step 2: Sew the Rear Pocket

Take the back panel and the pocket component.

  1. Fold the upper edge of each piece under ½ inch and press.
  2. Sew the folded edge to create a neat hem.

Position the pocket atop the rear panel with right sides facing out. Align the bottom and side edges.

Sew a basting stitch along the sides to secure the pocket in place while you construct the tote.

Put this piece aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Front Panel

Fold the top edge of the front panel down by ½ inch and stitch a hem.

Next, attach the printed fabric label.

  1. Adhere fusible web to the back of the printed fabric.
  2. Center
  3. The artwork on the front panel.
  4. Connect according to the producer’s guidelines.
  5. Stitch around the perimeter utilizing a zigzag stitch to fasten it.

This phase provides the bag with a playful, handcrafted appearance while preventing the fabric label’s edges from unraveling.

Step 4: Prepare the Side Panel

Take the lengthy side panel piece and hem both short edges with a ½ inch seam allowance.

This extended strip will encircle the sides and base of the tote bag.

Step 5: Create the Crochet Hook Holder

Take the 5″ x 7″ piece that will accommodate your crochet hooks.

  1. Fold the top and bottom edges under ½ inch.
  2. Press and sew the hems.

Place this panel on the side panel piece where one side of the bag will be.

Sew vertical lines down the panel to form slim pockets for crochet hooks, yarn needles, or stitch markers.

These small slots ensure your tools are orderly, preventing them from vanishing into the bag’s depths.

Step 6: Sew the Bag Body

Now we put together the tote.

Align the front panel and the lengthy side panel with the right sides facing each other.

Sew with a ⅜-inch seam allowance.

Once the front panel is secured, attach the back panel to the other edge of the side strip, again with right sides together.

You should now see the shape of the tote bag. This reveals the interior view.

Step 7: Finish the Seams

To reinforce the bag and maintain a tidy interior, we will flatten the seams.

On the outer side of the bag, begin with the two bottom seams and pinch them together.

Press and sew. After completing the two bottom sides, proceed to the four side seams.

Step 8: Stitch the Straps

Gather the strap segments and fold each lengthy side inward by ½ inch. Press thoroughly.

Fold the strap lengthwise in half, then press once more to encase the raw edges.

Topstitch along both edges of each strap.

My straps are slightly longer since I often carry a lot of yarn and tools, but you can trim them if you prefer a shorter tote.

Fasten the straps to the interior of the bag opening.

Stitch an X within the square to ensure the straps are securely attached.

Step 9: Insert the Yarn Feed Grommets

On the side opposite the crochet hook holder, place the grommets.

These facilitate your yarn to flow effortlessly out of the bag while you crochet.

Pass the yarn through the grommet and proceed stitching without the yarn ball rolling on the floor or tangling.

This is one of my favorite elements of this bag.
